A shaft seal is a radial seal used for rotating components. These are used to seal shafts and spindles in gearboxes, engines and other machines. The shaft seal consists of three main parts:
- Rubber sealing lip: This is the contact point between the shaft seal and the shaft. The rubber lifts slightly from the shaft, trapping a thin layer of oil between the sealing lip and the shaft. This thin layer forms a barrier and reduces frictional resistance.
- Metal housing: The rubber sealing lip is recessed in a metal housing. This housing holds the shaft seal in place and protects the rubber from external influences.
- Spring: The spring exerts pressure on the sealing lip, pressing it firmly against the shaft. This ensures a good seal.
O-ring or shaft seal, which is it?
A shaft seal is also commonly referred to as an O-ring. The product can be used for many applications. The advantage of a rubber O-ring is that they are very affordable. At Winparts we have O-rings that can be ordered individually, but also assortment boxes with different types and sizes. These are useful for professionals.
When ordering a shaft seal, it is important to pay attention to the size, material and design. For example, spring-loaded seals have an increased chance of groove formation, something that is relevant to consider when choosing a material.
