Seal ring and o-ring

A seal, also known as an oil seal or O-ring, is a component that seals shafts and gear spindles. You'll mainly find seals in rotating parts, where they prevent dirt from damaging the inside of the housing, while simultaneously keeping lubricants in place. At Winparts, we have a wide range of different types and sizes of seals and O-rings. Read on to learn more about their applications and differences.

A shaft seal is a radial seal used for rotating components. These are used to seal shafts and spindles in gearboxes, engines and other machines. The shaft seal consists of three main parts:

  • Rubber sealing lip: This is the contact point between the shaft seal and the shaft. The rubber lifts slightly from the shaft, trapping a thin layer of oil between the sealing lip and the shaft. This thin layer forms a barrier and reduces frictional resistance.
  • Metal housing: The rubber sealing lip is recessed in a metal housing. This housing holds the shaft seal in place and protects the rubber from external influences.
  • Spring: The spring exerts pressure on the sealing lip, pressing it firmly against the shaft. This ensures a good seal.

O-ring or shaft seal, which is it?

A shaft seal is also commonly referred to as an O-ring. The product can be used for many applications.  The advantage of a rubber O-ring is that they are very affordable. At Winparts we have O-rings that can be ordered individually, but also assortment boxes with different types and sizes. These are useful for professionals.

When ordering a shaft seal, it is important to pay attention to the size, material and design. For example, spring-loaded seals have an increased chance of groove formation, something that is relevant to consider when choosing a material.
