The sump of your car holds the engine oil. When your car is stationary, all the oil sinks down into the sump. Engine oil contains additives that improve lubrication, dissolve dirt, and prevent rust formation. Over time, the oil becomes too contaminated to properly lubricate the engine and must be replaced. To facilitate this, the sump plug or oil drain plug is installed at the bottom of the sump.
You place a container under the plug and loosen it, allowing the oil to easily flow into the container. The plug is fitted with a sealing ring to prevent any leakage. This sealing ring is often replaced when the oil is changed to ensure no leaks occur.
The oil drain plug can become damaged if overtightened or due to rust formation. You can find a new sump plug or sealing ring at Winparts.
