Core plugs

The core plugs, or freeze plugs, in your car are metal inserts pressed into various points in the engine block. The purpose of a frost plug is to protect the engine block if the water in the cooling system freezes due to extremely cold temperatures. When frozen, the coolant expands, putting the cooling system under increased pressure.

Without the frost plug, this can cause damage and leaks. When coolant mixes with oil, it creates a thick sludge resembling mayonnaise. This sludge prevents the oil from lubricating the engine properly, which can lead to significant damage.

In the UK, cars are unlikely to be exposed to temperatures cold enough for the coolant to freeze. Coolant contains a mixture of antifreeze, which in most cases, keeps it stable down to at least -20C.

However, it's important to have your coolant flushed and replaced periodically. Over time, the coolant becomes contaminated through use. Additionally, the amount of antifreeze and anti-corrosion agents in the coolant decreases over time. Regular replacement significantly reduces the risk of freezing.

If the freeze plug in your car does become damaged, you can easily find a replacement at Winparts. Simply enter your registration number or car model, or search for the correct diameter.
