Oil level sensor

The engine oil level sensor measures how much oil is left in your sump. The sensor is fitted in the sump, and when the oil level drops below a certain point, the sensor is no longer submerged and sends an electrical signal to the ECU. This triggers the oil pressure warning light on your dashboard.

The oil level sensor generally lasts a car's lifetime. However, it can sometimes become defective due to oxidation from water in the sump, or because your oil is old or of unsuitable quality.

If the oil warning light comes on, it's always wise to check your oil level before topping it up. If your car still has sufficient oil while the light is on, there's a chance that the sensor is broken.

Oil level sensor replacement

Replacing the oil level sensor is a time-consuming and messy job. To do this, you first need to drain the engine oil from your system and replace and bleed it afterwards. Additionally, it is difficult to reach the sensor because it is located at the bottom of the sump. Because this takes a lot of time, it is also expensive to have it done at a garage. With the right knowledge and tools, you can do this yourself. If you are not up to this, you can order the correct parts and deliver them to your mechanic yourself, in order to save money on material costs.
