A hammer features a long handle with a heavy head. When you strike with a hammer, the handle and the weight of the head increase the force of your blow. This makes it possible to drive in nails, break materials, or shape metal. Chisels are often flat and sharp. By pushing and moving the edge of the chisel into the material, material is removed. This is useful in woodworking and stone carving. You can also place the head of the chisel between two parts to force them apart.

Hammer

Hammers can be used for many purposes and come in different shapes and sizes.

For example, there are soft-faced hammers, these have replaceable nylon faces that absorb the impact of the hammer. This makes them suitable for tapping small parts into another part, such as pins and bearing bushes.

Rubber mallets have a heavier head, allowing you to strike harder. The soft, rubber head makes it less likely to scratch or dent the surface you are striking.

A club hammer often has a flat and a pointed side. A club hammer is made of hardened steel so that it does not break easily. This makes them suitable for hammering steel parts.

Chisel

A chisel is a cutting tool with a pointed or flat metal blade and a wooden or plastic handle. Chisels are used for working on surfaces of wood, stone and possibly other hard materials. Chisels come in many sizes, from pointed to flat and with a narrow or wide blade. For woodworking, a chisel can even be sharpened.

By using a hammer with your chisel you can apply more force to the chisel. This is useful if you want to chop away a piece of wood or stone, or if you want to separate two parts that are rusted or stuck together.
